Sworn translation

The officially valid translation in Spain. Signed and stamped by a sworn translator-interpreter appointed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation (MAEC), and accepted by every public authority.

What is a sworn translation?

It is a complete and faithful translation of a document, certified by a sworn translator-interpreter (traductor-intérprete jurado). The translator adds their signature, stamp and a certification stating that the translation is true to the original. Thanks to this certification, the translation is official and Spanish authorities accept it without further formalities.

In Spain, sworn translators are appointed by the MAEC after passing a state exam and are listed in a public register. For translations involving Catalan, the Government of Catalonia appoints its own sworn translators.

When do you need a sworn translation?

Whenever you have to submit a document written in another language to a public body, or for it to have legal effect in Spain. For example:

  • Immigration procedures: residence permits, family reunification, nationality.
  • Recognition of degrees and university studies.
  • Court, notarial and registry proceedings.
  • Marriages, Civil Registry entries and inheritance.
  • Public tenders, company formation and powers of attorney.

Digital format with electronic signature

Since Royal Decree 724/2020 came into force, sworn translators can issue translations electronically with a qualified electronic signature. This format is accepted by Spanish public authorities, can be sent by email and reaches you as soon as the translation is finished.

If the receiving authority requires a paper original, we send the signed and stamped translation by courier.

Sworn translation prices

The price depends on the number of words, the language pair and the turnaround. We count the words in your document automatically and give you a guide price instantly; your project manager confirms the final quote. Short documents —certificates, diplomas, criminal records— usually have a minimum fee per document.

How we work

  • We check that the document is complete and legible, and that it meets the authority’s requirements (for example, whether it needs an apostille).
  • We assign a sworn translator for your language pair.
  • A project manager oversees the order and is your single point of contact.
  • We deliver as an e-signed PDF or on paper, on the agreed date.
