US apostilles for documents used in Spain

Before a US document can be used in Spain, it needs an apostille from the right US authority. Together with our US apostille partner, we arrange it without you travelling to the US, and then translate everything into Spanish.

State or federal apostille?

  • State documents (birth, marriage and death certificates, divorce decrees, state court documents, notarised documents) are apostilled by the Secretary of State of the state that issued them.
  • Federal documents, such as FBI background checks and documents from federal agencies, are apostilled by the US Department of State.

Documents we usually handle

  • Long-form birth certificates (with the parents’ names, which Spanish authorities usually require).
  • Marriage certificates and divorce decrees.
  • University degrees and transcripts.
  • FBI background checks.
  • Powers of attorney and other notarised documents.

Then, the sworn translation

Once apostilled, we translate the document and the apostille into Spanish with a sworn translator appointed by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. One order, one price.

How much does it cost?

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be in the US?

No. We work with our US apostille partner, so you can arrange it from Spain or anywhere else.

Can you apostille a document from any state?

Tell us which state issued your document and we will confirm the process and timing for that state.

Can I apostille a photocopy?

Usually not. An apostille certifies an official signature, so it goes on a certified copy issued by the authority or on a document signed by a notary.
